The Concept
Destination Stamford is a visitor-economy initiative with a simple objective: change visitor behaviour.
Stamford already attracts visitors. The opportunity is not simply to attract more people, but to encourage those already considering or visiting Stamford to stay longer, experience more and spend more with local businesses.
Destination Stamford would work with accommodation providers, attractions, restaurants, pubs, independent retailers, experience providers and other tourism businesses to connect the individual parts of Stamford’s visitor economy.
Rather than promoting businesses in isolation, Destination Stamford would help create a more complete Stamford experience.
Stay longer. Experience more. Spend local.

For many visitors, Stamford can easily be treated as somewhere to visit for a few hours: arrive, walk around the historic centre, browse some shops, have lunch and leave.
Destination Stamford would seek to change that perception.
Instead of:
“Let’s visit Stamford this afternoon.”
We want visitors to think:
“Let’s have a couple of days in Stamford.”
A longer visit creates significantly more opportunities for local spending. A visitor staying for several hours may purchase lunch, coffee and perhaps something from a shop. A visitor staying for two or three days potentially purchases accommodation, breakfasts, lunches, dinners, drinks, attraction tickets, tours, transport, shopping and other experiences.
The objective is therefore not simply increasing visitor numbers.
It is about increasing the economic value of each visit to Stamford.
Working With Local Businesses
A central part of Destination Stamford would be developing strong working relationships with Stamford’s tourism and hospitality businesses.
The proposition would not simply be:
“Pay us to advertise your business.”
It would be:
“Let’s work together to generate additional business.”
Participating businesses could collaborate on packages, experiences, referrals, promotions and initiatives designed to increase visitor dwell time.
For example, an accommodation provider might offer a preferential midweek rate as part of a two- or three-night Stamford break. Attractions and experiences could provide package rates or added-value benefits.
The individual margin on a room or activity may occasionally be lower, but if the initiative generates otherwise unrealised bookings, additional nights or greater off-peak occupancy, the business could achieve greater overall weekly or monthly revenue.
At the same time, every additional night creates opportunities for spending elsewhere in Stamford.
The aim is therefore to grow the overall visitor economy, rather than simply moving existing spending from one Stamford business to another.
Curated Stamford Breaks
Destination Stamford could develop bookable or suggested multi-day experiences combining accommodation, food, attractions, heritage, shopping and entertainment.
The Stamford Weekend
A ready-made 48-hour Stamford experience could include Friday evening dinner, accommodation, Saturday breakfast, independent shopping or the market, a heritage experience, Burghley House, evening drinks and dinner, followed by Sunday breakfast and another local experience.
Instead of expecting visitors to research everything themselves, Destination Stamford gives them a reason and a plan to stay.
Midweek Stamford
Midweek breaks could target visitors with greater flexibility, including retired couples and people travelling outside school holidays.
“Stamford is even better midweek.”
Lower accommodation prices, quieter streets and attractions, easier restaurant reservations and potentially easier parking could become reasons to visit rather than signs of lower demand.
One More Night
Participating accommodation providers could offer incentives for visitors to extend their stay during quieter periods.
A discounted additional night may produce less revenue than a full-price night, but considerably more than an empty room.
More importantly for Stamford, another night potentially means another dinner, breakfast, attraction, shopping period and afternoon in town.
Experiences Rather Than Listings
Destination Stamford should not become simply another directory of local businesses.
The emphasis would be on turning Stamford’s existing assets into visitor experiences.
Potential initiatives include historic Stamford experiences built around churches, Georgian architecture, medieval lanes, coaching inns, hidden courtyards, film locations and local stories.
Food and pub trails could connect breakfast, coffee, lunch, historic pubs and dinner while telling the stories behind participating venues.
Independent shopping experiences could connect antiques, interiors, fashion, books, food, gifts and locally made products into themed routes.
Seasonal experiences could give visitors repeated reasons to return through Christmas, autumn, spring, Valentine's, Easter and summer breaks.
Rainy Day Stamford itineraries could prevent poor weather from prematurely ending a visit by connecting indoor attractions, churches, cafés, shops, pubs and experiences.
Exclusive Destination Stamford experiences could eventually include tastings, private talks, demonstrations, historic pub evenings, chef experiences, behind-the-scenes visits or other activities that cannot simply be found through an ordinary business directory.

Stamford as a Base
One of the most important objectives would be converting a short daytime visit into a longer visitor day.
Destination Stamford would also identify practical reasons visitors shorten their stay and work with partners to reduce them.
Encouraging visitors to spend more in Stamford does not mean they have to remain within the town every hour of their stay.
